The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, Massachusetts, was founded in 1799 as the East India Marine Society and is now one of America's oldest continually functioning museums, having merged the Peabody Museum and Essex Institute in 1992. Its collection of approximately 1.3 million objects, which ranges from maritime antiquities and American decorative arts to Asian, Oceanic, and African works, is supported by research libraries that have over 400,000 books.
